Xenia Commercial Windows: Glare & Heat Reduction with Madico Film

July 6, 2026 · 4 min read

Learn how commercial window film reduces glare and heat, using a Downtown Xenia installation as an example. Maintain natural window appearance.

Understanding Window Film: A Practical Guide

When harsh sunlight streams into your commercial space, it can create uncomfortable glare and excessive heat, impacting productivity and energy costs. Window film offers a practical solution, and understanding how it works can help you choose the right option for your needs. This guide explains the technology behind window film, using a recent installation in Downtown Xenia as an example.

How Window Film Controls Light and Heat

Window films are thin, transparent layers of polyester applied to the interior surface of glass. They work by manipulating the sun's energy before it enters your building.

Visible Light Transmission (VLT)

One key metric is Visible Light Transmission, or VLT. This measures the percentage of visible light that passes through the film and into the building. A lower VLT means less light comes through, which directly reduces glare. In the Xenia project, an 8% VLT film was chosen. This significantly cut down on the intense glare common in commercial spaces, making it easier to work and reducing eye strain, all while keeping the windows looking natural from the outside.

Solar Heat Gain Control

Window films also manage solar heat gain. This is the amount of heat from the sun that enters your building through the windows. Films can reject a significant portion of this solar energy. While specific metrics like Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER) and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) are used to quantify this, the practical effect is a cooler interior. The Madico CH 8 film used in Xenia effectively reduced heat buildup, contributing to a more comfortable environment and potentially lowering air conditioning costs.

Maintaining Natural Appearance

A common concern is how window film will alter the building's exterior look. Many films are designed to be optically clear or to have a very subtle tint. The Madico CH 8 film specifically addresses this by reducing glare and heat without adding an unnatural reflective or mirrored appearance. This was crucial for the Xenia client who wanted to maintain the building's original aesthetic. The film achieves this by absorbing and reflecting solar energy rather than simply bouncing it back, allowing the windows to appear largely unchanged from the outside.

Choosing the Right Film for Your Business

Selecting the appropriate window film involves considering your specific needs, whether it’s glare reduction, heat control, UV protection, or privacy.
